Qualifications

To become a licensed immigration adviser for the first time you must either have completed an approved qualification or entry course, or be registered as a migration agent in Australia.

Current qualifications and entry courses

The approved qualification for a New Zealand immigration adviser licence currently available to study is:

  • Te Pūkenga | Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology’s Graduate Diploma in New Zealand Immigration Advice.

The approved entry course for a New Zealand immigration adviser licence currently available to study is:

  • Courses 1 – 4 of Te Pūkenga | Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology’s Graduate Diploma in New Zealand Immigration Advice.

The Graduate Diploma takes one academic year full-time and is also available part-time. The online programme of study covers the Immigration Adviser Competency Standards and the Licensed Immigration Advisers Code of Conduct. 

Students may apply for a provisional immigration adviser licence once they have completed and passed Courses 1-4 of the Graduate Diploma in New Zealand Immigration Advice, and must have an approved supervision arrangement.

Historical qualifications and entry courses

The following qualification is no longer available to study. However, it remains an approved qualification for those who have completed it:

  • Te Pūkenga | Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology’s Graduate Certificate in New Zealand Immigration Advice.

The following entry course is no longer available to study. However, it remains an approved entry course for those who have completed it:

  • Courses A and B of Te Pūkenga |Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology’s Graduate Certificate in New Zealand Immigration Advice.

Approved refresher courses

If you intend to reapply for a licence, but more than 12 months has passed since you last held one, you must complete an approved refresher course before you reapply. You must submit your application to reapply within 12 months of completing an approved refresher course.

The approved refresher courses for a New Zealand immigration adviser licence currently available to study are:

  • Te Pūkenga | Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology’s New Zealand Immigration Advice Refresher Course.
  • Te Pūkenga | Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology’s Graduate Diploma in New Zealand Immigration Advice.
  • Courses 1 – 4 of Te Pūkenga | Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology's Graduate Diploma in New Zealand Immigration Advice.

Please note that if an applicant was previously licensed through the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997, they are not required to complete refresher training even if it has been more than 12 months since they held a licence.
